Don't forget Graphic, warns Ormsby

Tuesday 3 March 2015, 4:36pm

Surpass may be the more highly ranked of Chad Ormsby's two Auckland Cup chances, but he says punters shouldn't forget about his other charge.

Surpass is an $8 chance on the New Zealand TAB for the 3200m handicap at Ellerslie on Wednesday after winning the Waikato Cup in December and running second in the City of Auckland Cup at Ellerslie on New Year's Day.

But Ormsby, who trains in partnership with Michael Moroney, says last year's Wellington Cup winner Graphic, rated a $16 chance, should not be forgotten despite unplaced efforts at his last two starts.

"They had their final hit-outs on Monday morning and I rode both of them myself," Ormsby told NZ Racing Desk.

"They went very well and I think Graphic will find his best form. While there may have been a question mark over how Graphic is going, he feels back to his best to me."

Surpass carries the topweight of 59kg and is conceding 3kg to $5.50 Cup co-favourite Benzini. It's the same weight difference there was between the pair in the Matamata Cup last month won by Benzini, in which Surpass was a length-and-a-quarter back in third place.

A further 4kg away from Surpass in the weights is the other Cup co-favourite, Rock Diva who came to prominence with victory in the Group Three Sunline Vase on Auckland Cup day last year. Her chances have not been helped by barrier 17.

"I think we should just resign ourselves to the fact she will draw poorly in a big race," trainer Tony Pike said.

"She is very well though and her last two runs have been excellent so she has to be a real chance."
