Gundy Sun delivers overdue win for Gollan

Saturday 3 January 2015, 6:22pm

Premier trainer Tony Gollan wondered about the twists in racing after his soon-to-be-retired gelding Gundy Son won at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Gollan has had a frustrating summer, picking up minor prize money in six feature races before Saturday's Goldmarket Handicap (1400m).

Gundy Son ($13) scored by a long neck to Daph `N' Alf ($4.40) with two lengths to Kempelly ($10) in the Listed race.

Gollan started the week thinking he could win the Goldmarket with his smart galloper Someday and rated Gundy Son as his back-up horse.

Someday went amiss on Friday and was scratched leaving nine-year-old Gundy Son as his only runner.

"Gundy Son does love the Gold Coast but when it rained earlier in the week I didn't give him a great deal of hope," Gollan said.

"But the track dried out nicely and he got the run of the race here. It really is a strange sport.

"Gundy Son started his career with Rob Heathcote and I am glad I got a win with him before he retired or I would be hearing about it for a while from Robbie."

Gundy Son will have one more run in the Magic Millions Cup next Saturday before he is retired.

"He has been a wonderful old horse and his win today takes his prize money over the $600,000 mark," Gollan said.

Jockey Tegan Harrison scored her third win in three days for Gollan after a winning double for the stable at Doomben on Thursday.

"We had a lovely run and when Daph `N' Alf challenged him he found something," Harrison said.

"Tony has stuck by me since I came out of my apprenticeship and I really get a kick out of winning for him."
