Plateau strikes Gold in Bat Out Of Hell

Saturday 3 January 2015, 5:42pm

Trainer Jim Jarvis was already looking a year ahead after his gelding Plateau Gold made it back-to-back victories in the Bat Out Of Hell on Saturday.

The 900-metre scamper around the Gold Coast is rated the Queensland's short-course championship and Plateau Gold ($4.80) won it in the manner of a genuine speedster.

Jockey Jim Byrne jumped Plateau Gold to the led and he outran a smart field with Natural Dancer ($26) 1-1/4 lengths in second with a further 1-1/4 lengths to The Storeman ($7) in third.

Jarvis plans to have Plateau Gold back for a third crack at the Bat Out Of Hell in 2016 but hopes to have a less-troubled journey to the race than this time.

"When he won the Bat Out Of Hell last time we gave him a spell and then brought him back with a 10 weeks preparation."

"But he had a track setback and we decided to miss races such as the Kirby Handicap at Grafton in the winter and set him for another crack at the Bat Out Of Hell," Jarvis said.

He said Plateau Gold had been back in work for about 20 weeks when he won first-up at Doomben two weeks ago.

"Our confidence was dented bit when the rain came but then the track dried out so he was suited perfectly," Jarvis said.

Plateau Gold has now won eight of his 15 starts and Jarvis is resigned to him being restricted to city racing in future.
