Rawiller and Waller team up at Canterbury

Tuesday 21 July 2015, 4:17pm

Nash Rawiller will make a brief return to Sydney racing during the annual break in Hong Kong where he has just finished his first full season of riding.

Rawiller will team up with premier trainer Chris Waller at Canterbury on Saturday when his rides include Kristy Lee, Aurora Glow and Eigelstein.

Waller will have a strong hand at the last Saturday meeting of the Australian season which he ends as Sydney's premier trainer for the fourth successive year and the country's leading Group One trainer with 14, double that of second-placed Gai Waterhouse.

"It's great to have Nash back to ride for us albeit briefly," Waller said.

Eigelstein is one of six Waller-trained stayers in the Benchmark 93 (1900m) with stablemate Diametric the 59kg topweight.

"Diametric is entered for Melbourne and will more than likely go there," Waller said.

Rawiller replaces the suspended Tye Angland on the three Waller horses but is familiar with both Kristy Lee and Eigelstein.

Among Eigelstein's opposition will be stablemate Sir Mako who has won two races from three starts since coming to Sydney from New Zealand.

Although he is a seven-year-old, Sir Mako has had just 15 starts, winning five.

"He is a typical old-fashioned New Zealand stayer," Waller said.

"I'm not sure how far he can go but we will give him every chance."

Sir Mako was trained in New Zealand by his part-owner Dan O'Leary who is also part of the group which owns the Waller-trained Who Shot Thebarman, third in last year's Melbourne Cup and second in the Sydney Cup.

Who Shot Thebarman, winner of the 2014 Auckland Cup, was one of the stable's Group One winners to run in barrier trials at Rosehill on Tuesday morning in preparation for the spring.

He was given an easy time over 900 metres, finishing sixth. The trial also featured Royal Descent, winner of the 2013 Australian Oaks.

Although the mare hasn't won since the Oaks she has racked up a series of big-race minor placings in two George Main Stakes, two Doncaster Miles, the Epsom Handicap and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes earlier this year.

Victoria Derby winner Preferment and Doncaster winner Kermadec also had soft trials on Tuesday.
