Jack Hobbs wins Irish Derby for Godolphin

Sunday 28 June 2015, 10:29am

Jack Hobbs has enjoyed his day in the sun with a superb display to win the Irish Derby, giving trainer John Gosden his first victory in the Classic at the Curragh.

Second in the Epsom Derby to stablemate Golden Horn, the Godolphin colt became the first British-trained winner since Commander In Chief in 1993.

William Buick kept things simple aboard Saturday's market leader, positioning him close to the pace as the William Haggas-trained Epsom third, Storm The Stars raced in the lead.

Jack Hobbs loomed ominously alongside from the home turn and showed thrilling acceleration once asked the question by a confident Buick to seal victory in a matter of strides, putting five lengths on Storm The Stars.

The winner has been trimmed from 12-1 to 8-1 for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on October 4.

"He did it in good style. He got a nice split at the head of the straight and then William waited with him, which was right," Gosden said.

"Quite frankly, it's solid Epsom form, the second has run a blinder and was third to us at Epsom, so there's nothing wrong with the form.

"We'll put him away now and go for the Prix Niel and then on to the Arc."
