Glyn and Chad Schofield don't need a win in the Melbourne Cup to make some kind of history.

They're already the first father and son to ride in a Melbourne Cup for nearly 50 years.

It's not the first time there's been two Schofields in a race but Tuesday will be the first Melbourne Cup.

Schofield senior won the 2013 Emirates Stakes aboard Boban when Chad was on Strike The Stars.

"That was the first Group One we went in," Glyn said.

"And tomorrow's the first Melbourne Cup, so hopefully the same result.

"It's great to be in it.

"I hope he just realises and sticks to the advice I've been giving him all along - let your elders go first."

Schofield senior rates both horses - his mount Au Revoir and Chad's Mr O'Ceirin, as outside chances but says Au Revoir is "a little bit under the radar" despite a difficult gate.

"I had a sit on the horse on Friday, he impressed me, gave me a lovely feel," he said.

Chad, aged 20, says despite the attention there's no pressure of expectation on Mr O'Ceirin.

"It is the Melbourne Cup though so if you don't feel a few butterflies there's something wrong," he said.

Mr O'Ceirin is a horse that likes to race on the speed, Chad said.

"So that's what we'll do tomorrow and hopefully he can keep fighting as long as he can."
