European hopefuls start spring journey

Nineteen gallopers will enter quarantine in England on Thursday to be on the first shipment of international gallopers for this year's Melbourne spring carnival.

Dual Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux and last year's Caulfield Cup runner-up Dandino are among the horses who will spend two weeks in quarantine at Newmarket before arriving in Melbourne on September 27.

Six of the 19 internationals will be joining Australian trainers, namely Amralah (Robert Hickmott), Cafe Society (Gai Waterhouse), Contributor (John O'Shea), Manduro's Son (Mike Moroney), Orator (David Hayes) and Terrubi (David Payne).

With space at a premium at Werribee racecourse, Racing Victoria's international talent scout Leigh Jordon said the horses joining Australian stables would vacate the complex once their quarantine period was complete.

It will allow up to eight horses to arrive on the second shipment, including star Irish sprinter Slade Power and Cox Plate hope Adelaide.

The horses who will venture to Melbourne for the spring carnival on the first shipment are Mutual Regard, German galloper Protectionist and stablemate Nuntius, Cups hopeful Ambivalent, Cox Plate entrant Farraaj and stablemates Side Glance and Van Percy.

Along with Dandino, trainer Marco Botti also has Seismos, Guest Of Honour and Renew headed to Melbourne while trainer Stuart Kittow has Noble Protector.

"There's a great mix of European horses that are starting quarantine en route to Melbourne," Jordon said.
