Commanding Jewel chasing slice of history

Wednesday 10 September 2014, 2:47pm

Commanding Jewel is poised to rewrite the record books by becoming the first horse to win the Let's Elope Stakes twice.

The high-profile mare has only raced once since she claimed the Group Two feature 12 months ago, finishing an eye-catching first-up third in the Cockram Stakes.

Troy Corstens, who trains Commanding Jewel in partnership with his father Leon, is confident the classy mare is ready to fire at Flemington on Saturday.

"She's really bounced out of her first-up run and looks better in the coat," Corstens said.

"She's a really happy mare and looks very strong. There's still improvement to come but we're really, really pleased with her going into this.

"Hopefully second-up she can do it again this year."

Commanding Jewel, a three-quarter sister to retired star Atlantic Jewel, won the Group One Thousand Guineas in 2012 but has been plagued by injury setbacks over the past two years.

Her 2013 Let's Elope Stakes win came at just her second start after 44-weeks off the scene before a muscle problem cut short her spring.

She then injured her foot in a paddock accident and a potential Group One appearance during the Brisbane winter was aborted to concentrate on this year's Melbourne carnival.

Corstens said connections were thrilled with her return at Caulfield.

"I think with that little pipe-opener it has brought her right on and it will stand her in good stead second-up," he said.

The Let's Elope Stakes has attracted a field of 10 with Gregers the early $2.80 favourite ahead of Commanding Jewel at $3.30.
