Dandino confirmed for Caulfield Cup

Wednesday 10 September 2014, 12:39pm

The Caulfield Cup has been added as a spring target for English stayer Dandino.

After an overnight phone hook-up between managing owner Darren Dance from Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock and Dandino's Newmarket-based trainer Marco Botti, it was decided the horse would travel to Melbourne in the first shipment of internationals.

Connections had been considering a later dispatch which would have made the Melbourne Cup the horse's only Australian run.

"But after his solid run at Kempton last weekend and the way he pulled up, and just the way he ran in the race (Caulfield Cup) last year, we've decided that he will come out on the first shipment and will contest both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups," Dance told radio station RSN on Wednesday.

Botti and ATB are set to have two runners in the Cups which are also the aim for last-start Geoffrey Freer Stakes winner Seismos.

Dandino finished fourth in the Group Three September Stakes at Kempton last weekend and Dance said the horse's four starts this year had him primed for his trip to Australia.

"It's not often you can find a horse like Dandino that can be competitive in a Caulfield and Melbourne Cup. Normally they sort of get pigeon holed into one or the other," Dance said.

"It may take us years to find another one like him so we figure we should take our chances while we can."

Dandino is at $21 in Caulfield and Melbourne Cup betting with Seismos at $31 for the Caulfield Cup and $35 for the Melbourne Cup.

Group Two winner Guest Of Honour, another ATB horse with Botti, will run in the Group One Toorak Handicap ahead of a potential Cox Plate start.
