Costin cashing in on Golden Rose booking

Tuesday 9 September 2014, 1:54pm

Being the only apprentice with a ride in the $1 million Golden Rose is already paying handsome dividends for Winona Costin.

That is because since the 19-year-old's surprise engagement for longshot Press Report in Saturday's Group One race, Costin hasn't stopped riding winners.

She is within sight of losing her 3kg city allowance and with six rides at Warwick Farm on Wednesday she can easily take a step closer to that milestone in a career that is starting to take off six months after arriving in Sydney.

In between a midweek double for her boss Gai Waterhouse and two rides for as many winners at Randwick last Saturday, Costin landed the most important victory of her career.

Her navigation to win the Mona Lisa Stakes on country mare Bouzy Rouge at Wyong won her even more recognition while confirming her growing confidence in the saddle since joining Tulloch Lodge.

"I've always had a few doubts about making it but I think I'm getting there," Costin said.

Lee Curtis will be a happy trainer if she gives Press Report, a $101 chance, the same opportunity she gave Bouzy Rouge.

But first there is work to be done at Warwick Farm with rides for six different trainers including Kembla Grange's Michael Tubman who helped shape the early part of Costin's career.

But her best chance to post another city winner is likely to come in the TAB Early Quaddie Handicap (1100m).

Costin will partner Directive for Craig Carmody after she was narrowly beaten on the three-year-old over 1000m in the wet at Warwick Farm two weeks ago.

She will also be hoping to continue a profitable run with Rosehill trainer David Payne when she rides Chez Harmony in the TAB iPhone App Handicap (1300m).
