Racing Queensland officials have warned they will not accept bad behaviour on or off the track after apprentice Kirk Matheson was suspended for an incident at a recent public function.

Stewards investigated allegations Matheson was involved in an altercation at the annual Racing Queensland Apprentices Awards night on August 24 at a Brisbane hotel.

It was alleged he pushed a female registered stable hand to the floor in the foyer of the hotel. Matheson and the woman are known to each other.

The rider pleaded guilty to a charge of improper conduct which stewards said was a serious breach of the rule but they took into account his remorse and his plea.

Matheson was suspended for four weeks but stewards stayed one week of the ban to take in the mitigating factors and ordered him to undergo counselling from a professional sports psychologist.

Racing Queensland chief executive Darren Condon said there was a no tolerance policy when it came to such behaviour.

"Racing participants must realise when they are in the public eye they are representing the sport," Condon said.
