Buffering wins third Qld champion title

Sunday 7 September 2014, 2:05pm

Star sprinter Buffering is ready to take on the world after securing his third Queensland Horse of the Year title.

His trainer Rob Heathcote missed Saturday night's announcement due to a bout of the flu but was feeling a lot better a day later.

Buffering became the first horse since Falvelon, who was installed into the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame, to claim the honour three times.

It was a big week for Heathcote who trained five winners in six days and also helped with a fire which destroyed a neighbour's home on Thursday.

"It's been a big week for sure but I am really pleased Buffering won the title. He joins the all time greats now and I think there is more to come," Heathcote said.

Buffering won a jump-out by 10 lengths on Tuesday and will have another hit-out next week.

"He will then head to Melbourne for big sprints down there," Heathcote said.

"But the ultimate aim is Hong Kong in December and I can hardly wait for him to take on the world's best.

"Buffering is a once in a life time horse and it has been a great ride so far."

Buffering had seven starts at Group One level during the season for wins in the Manikato Stakes, VRC Sprint and the Winterbottom Stakes and he was placed in the other four.

He beat an all star field for the title including Group One horses Spirit of Boom, Temple of Boom, River Lad, and Solzhenitsyn.

However, Heathcote lost out to his arch rival Tony Gollan for trainer of the year.

Gollan won his first Brisbane premiership and had two Group One winners in his 80 wins.

The Jockey of the Year was another hotly contested affair with metropolitan premiership winner Tim Bell backing up to win the Queensland Jockey of the Year in his first year as a senior rider.

Bell's year was highlighted by a treble on Queensland Oaks Day, which included his maiden Group One victory on Tinto in the feature race.

Jockey Glen Boss was one of four inductees to the Hall of Fame along with owners Bill and Ev Stanley, trainer Tom Dawson and Falvelon.

Stradbroke Handicap winning trainer Natalie McCall won the inaugural Wayne Wilson medal named for the popular race caller who died earlier this year.
