Ryan rues scheduling changes for fillies

Friday 5 September 2014, 1:55pm

The reshuffled spring timetable has prompted Gerald Ryan to focus on the Sydney carnival with top filly Peggy Jean.

The juvenile Group One winner will make her first appearance as a three-year-old in the Furious Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday as she follows the Princess Series trail.

Ryan is hoping the ATC Sires' Produce winner can progress to the Group One Flight Stakes at Randwick on October 4 and has all but ruled out a bid for the Thousand Guineas.

Guelph claimed the Flight Stakes-Thousand Guineas double last year when the races were 10 days apart but the Victorian Group One has been brought forward by four days this season.

Ryan says the changes make it difficult to target both races.

"Not when they're a week apart," Ryan said.

"Unless the Guineas was going to be her last run before a spell."

Peggy Jean will clash with Blue Diamond Stakes winner and Golden Slipper runner-up Earthquake for the first time on Saturday with the Godolphin filly strongly fancied at $1.70.

Both are resuming and need to prove they have returned in the same heart they showed as juveniles.

"I'm nervous, anxious. You like to see them come back and do it on race day but everybody is in the same boat," Ryan said.

"But she's bright and well and she's come back stronger."

Ryan also has a strong hand in the three-year-old feature for the males with Washington Heights top pick for the Ming Dynasty Quality.
