Sunset Rock primed for G3 Quezette Stakes

Thursday 14 August 2014, 1:23pm

Formlines don't get much healthier than a victory over a subsequent Group One winner.

The Lloyd Kennewell-trained Sunset Rock achieved that when she defeated Go Indy Go in the Listed Cinderella Stakes at Morphettville.

A month later, Go Indy Go went to Sydney and claimed the Champagne Stakes.

"Sunset Rock beat her pretty much fair and square when they met," Kennewell said.

Go Indy Go's connections have Cox Plate aspirations for the filly while Kennewell will start Sunset Rock's campaign in Saturday's Group Three Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

Kennewell sent Sunset Rock for a spell after her Cinderella Stakes win but he said the Domesday filly had improved during her winter break.

Kennewell says the Quezette Stakes will be the first step towards deciding Sunset Rock's best spring program.

"With all three-year-olds, every trainer enters them for everything they are eligible for so she's in the Thousand Guineas," Kennewell said.

"If she looks like she's only going to be a sprinter, she'll go to something like the Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valley next month as long as she comes up and runs well first-up."

Sunset Rock trialled against stablemates Deiheros and the Group Three Vain Stakes hopeful Get The Nod on August 1.

The trial fell away to become hit-out exclusively for Kennewell-trained runners and there was nothing to be learnt from the heat.

"They didn't really get a good hit-out but all three of them are nice horses," Kennewell said.

Sunset Rock drifted from $5 to $8 while the Mick Price-trained Royal Snitzel has been backed from $6 into $2.80 favouritism in early Quezette Stakes betting.
