McArdle out to send bookies Beleeup

Friday 11 July 2014, 2:05pm

Beleeup caught punters unawares with his last-start win and will go around at big odds again in Saturday's Listed AR Creswick Final at Flemington.

Beleeup won a heat of the Creswick series at $61 on June 28 but trainer John McArdle says the gelding's work on the Tuesday before the race showed the three-year-old was set to produce a big run.

"His track rider got off him on the Tuesday and said he wouldn't get beaten and he went out and won at Flemington," McArdle said.

McArdle said Beleeup produced a different type of gallop this week but still broke 37 seconds for his last 600m at Mornington.

However, bookmakers are prepared to let Beleeup run against them in the AR Creswick Series Final after posting the sprinter as a $31 chance to win the $120,000 contest.

McArdle said Beleeup had the ability to become a stakes winner at Flemington but the rising four-year-old's mindset would dictate the quality of his performance.

The VRC Oaks-winning trainer said giving Beleeup time to settle in the second half of the field would also give him the best chance of beating the likes of the $4.60 favourite Miss Promiscuity.

"Riding him differently has started to wake him up but he's still a dig dumb kid that will meet a better class of field tomorrow," McArdle said.

"He's like a 14-year-old kid. He's all legs and he concentrates for about four minutes a day but that's him."

McArdle will spell Beleeup after the AR Creswick Series Final and will bypass the spring in favour of races like the Group Three Standish Handicap over the summer months.

Chris Symons has the task of getting Beleeup home from barrier 15 at Flemington.
