Sky building for Monash return

Monday 9 June 2014, 1:19pm

Robbie Laing has a simple assessment for the progress of smart sprinter Lord Of The Sky.

Laing has set the colt for the Group Three Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on July 5 and the three-year-old has thrilled the Cranbourne horseman with his recent work.

"Flying, he's flying," Laing said.

Lord Of The Sky continued his brilliant form around the Caulfield circuit with his win at the venue on May 17.

The third placegetter Don't Get Excited proceeded to win the $100,000 Golden Topaz at Swan Hill last Friday.

Laing said Lord Of The Sky had done well since his last start and would be unconcerned if the Danerich colt put on weight during his time away from the races.

The trainer said he would continue to follow the successful formula of trialling Lord Of The Sky less than a week before his next race.

"It seems to be a good recipe with him because he probably doesn't do quite enough in his gallops," Laing said.

"I want him to be a big, strong sprinter. We don't have to do a lot with him except for the trial we'll give him a week before.

"As soon as he gets out of the barriers, he runs 46 (seconds) for 800 (metres)."

The Sir John Monash Stakes will be run at Group Three level for the first time in 2014.

Pago Rock won the Monash Stakes last year before he was placed at Group Two level later in the spring while Platelet won the race in 2012 before going on to become a dual Group One winner in 2013.
