Race to be named after Wayne Wilson

Sunday 8 June 2014, 2:47pm

Racing Queensland officials will rename a major Queensland feature race after the late race caller Wayne Wilson.

Tributes have flowed for the popular Wilson since the cancer he fought for 15 years finally claimed him on Friday night.

RQ's chief executive Darren Condon said there would be no better way to remember Wilson than to name a race after him.

"That is a give me, but we just have to come up with the right race," Condon said.

"He loved racing and I am sure his family would approve."

"It was actually Wayne who was the driving force behind us renaming a lot of our feature events after Queensland stars.

"That is why we have a J J Atkins Stakes, B J McLachlan Stakes, George Moore Stakes, Mick Dittman Plate, Fred Best Classic, Keith Noud Hcp etcetera.

"Wayne pushed for them to be recognised and it is fitting he is given the same honour."

Condon said the only problem was finding the right race.

"There have been a few suggestions such as the Eye Liner at Ipswich, the Queensland Cup and even the QTC Cup," he said.

"But we will have to talk with the clubs and see what we can come up with."

Meanwhile, chief integrity officer Wade Birch has confirmed a new local rule will be introduced to allow re-handicapping of Listed races in Queensland.

The weights for Saturday's Strawberry Road Handicap at Eagle Farm were thrown into disarray when the two topweights were not among the acceptors.

As a Listed race the field could not be re-handicapped and the weights had to be raised two kilograms to accommodate he mandatory 58kg minimum topweight.

Transporter, who ended up as topweight carrying just two kilos more than the rest of the field, won by 2-1/2 lengths.

"We have admitted there is a problem which seems limited to Queensland," Birch said.

"I think the rule to allow races to be re-handicapped will be extended to Listed and Quality events."
