Don't Get Excited has returned to his old stamping ground in style to win the $100,000 Golden Topaz at Swan Hill.

The four-year-old gelding started his career at the track in north-western Victoria with Austy Coffey before being transferred to the Stephen Theodore stable at Cranbourne a year ago.

Friday's Golden Topaz (1200m), the feature race on the opening day of the Swan Hill three-day racing carnival, had been a target for the sprinter this campaign and he did not let his excited connections down.

Theodore said most of the horse's owners were from the area.

"Today is absolutely fantastic. You can see the joy the owners have got out of it," Theodore told TVN.

"People say I love these (country) carnivals, well this is why."

Don't Get Excited sat outside the leader Pampelonne and used his weight advantage over the other fancied runners to his advantage, hitting the front early in the straight.

Favourite Lonhspresso ($3.50) could only get within 1-3/4 lengths of Don't Get Excited on the line with 2012 winner Alpha Proxima ($21) third.

Lonhspresso and Don't Get Excited began their careers in the same maiden at Swan Hill two years ago, finishing second and third respectively.

Don't get Excited took his record to eight wins from 21 starts.

Earlier, the Mick Price-trained filly Devon Princess took out the $130,000 VOBIS Gold Betfair Classic (1300m) for two-year-olds, defeating odds-on favourite Symphonix by four lengths.
