Shoreham will get his first shot at the Flemington 3200 metres on Saturday in what trainer Saab Hasan hopes can be a precursor to a dream Melbourne Cup start later this year.

Shoreham is one of the fancied runners in Saturday's Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes, the only other race run over the Melbourne Cup course, and Hasan says the four-year-old is peaking for the final start of his campaign.

Hasan has just one concern.

"The 3200 won't be an issue at all. The only issue we've got is he's got to carry 60 kilos plus a kilo for the (jockey's) vest," Hasan said.

"Anything above 58 or 59 kilos when you are running over two miles is a huge impost.

"That's the only concern. If he was a horse that was 16 or 17 hands high it wouldn't matter but he's only 15 hands, if that."

Shoreham failed to qualify for last year's Melbourne Cup after a spring campaign which included a second in the Moonee Valley Cup.

Hasan will try again this year.

"We're planning to put him away after Saturday and hopefully this run doesn't gut him," the trainer said.

"He can come back for races like the Geelong Cup or Moonee Valley Cup and if he happens to get into the Melbourne Cup with 50kg on his back he's going to be a force to be reckoned with in my view."

Shoreham's original autumn aims were the Easter and Warrnambool Cups, in which he was fifth and third respectively, but Hasan said the gelding took longer to come up this time in and was peaking for his sixth run on Saturday after a close second over 2800m last time out.

"I couldn't be happier going into this race, I just wish we didn't have 60 kilos," he said.

Stablemate Grand Emperor is one of the outsiders in the Listed Straight Six (1200m) but Hasan said the gelding had trained on well since a last-start second with 60kg in a restricted sprint at Warrnambool.

"He's a very good galloper and he's not far off that class at all," Hasan said.

"He just loves a little bit of give in the ground so hopefully we get a bit more rain tonight."

Import Voila Ici has his second start for his new stable in the Banjo Paterson Series Heat while Hasan believes two-year-old Turfane can run well first-up in the opening event.
