McDonald, McEvoy chase Golden Whip

Friday 25 April 2014, 3:12pm

James McDonald is in the box seat to win the Sydney autumn carnival's Golden Whip award but at least five other jockeys are still in contention heading into the All Aged Stakes meeting at Randwick.

McDonald, whose carnival highlights include wins in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Golden Slipper and ATC Australian Oaks, has 33 points, four clear of Kerrin McEvoy and five ahead of Nash Rawiller.

His five Randwick rides on Saturday include Bennetta for Grahame Begg in the Group One All Aged Stakes.

McEvoy, who shared last year's award with Hugh Bowman, has a numerical edge over McDonald on Saturday with eight mounts including three pre-post favourites.

Darley's No.1 jockey will be strongly fancied to win on Haussman (race one) and Knoydart (race two).

Points are allocated on a 3-2-1 basis and the award follows the introduction of the Nathan Berry Medal for the best rider during the two days of The Championships.

The medal was shared by Berry's brother Tommy and McDonald.
