Black Caviar honoured with Cartier award

Black Caviar has been honoured in London with the unbeaten champion winning Cartier Sprinter Of The Year at the annual Racing Awards night.

The mare's 22nd straight win at Royal Ascot in June in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes was one of the most dramatic of the year, and was rewarded at a glittering ceremony in London on Tuesday.

But current World Horse Rankings' number one Frankel swept the board, taking home Cartier Horse Of The Year for the second year in a row.

Owned and bred by Prince Khalid Abdulla and trained by Sir Henry Cecil, Frankel also won the Cartier Older Horse category.

The Cartier Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing and are determined by points earned by horses in Pattern races throughout the year, along with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists and reader votes from the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph.

Yeats and Ouija Board both won four Cartier awards apiece during their respective careers but they have been eclipsed by Frankel.

The four-year-old's five honours make him the most decorated horse in the history of the awards.

Lord Cecil was too ill to attend the ceremony but sent a message saying he was thrilled with the horse's achievements.

"Frankel, with his brilliance, has been a great ambassador for British racing and has captured the hearts of so many people, some of whom have never been racing in their lives," he said in London's Daily Telegraph.

Black Caviar's award comes just days after the Victoria Racing Club announced they would rename the Group One Lightning Stakes in honour of the great mare.
