Brisbane may be final stop for Streama

Monday 14 April 2014, 1:04pm

Unless there is a dramatic improvement in the weather, outstanding mare Streama has run her last race in Sydney.

The triple Group One winner, who will go to the broodmare barn in the spring, is likely to have her swan song in the Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane in June.

Streama finished with the tailenders in Saturday's Doncaster Mile run on a heavy Randwick track while her Guy Walter-trained stablemate Toydini also struggled in the conditions.

"She possibly won't run again in Sydney. There would have to be a vast improvement in the track," Walter said.

"I need to discuss it with her owners but the Stradbroke may be her last race.

"At this stage she certainly won't run on Saturday in either the Queen Elizabeth or the Queen of the Turf."

Walter said no decision had yet been made whether Toydini would run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

He finished 14th of the 20 runners in the Doncaster, 11 lengths from the winner Sacred Falls while Streama was 17th, another three lengths behind.

Final acceptances for Saturday's Group One races close at noon on Tuesday with rain forecast in Sydney until at least Wednesday.

The winner of eight races and more than $2 million prize money, Streama was a close third to Linton in the 2013 Stradbroke (1400m) and ran second to Red Tracer in the Group One Tatt's Tiara on a slow track at Eagle Farm.

Her Group One performances include wins in the 2011 Flight Stakes, 2012 Australian Oaks and last year's George Main Stakes and minor placings in five other major races.

By 2005 Golden Slipper winner Stratum, Streama was bred and retained to race by the Coghlan family.

She has won races from 1200 to 2400 metres.
