Furbish makes winning debut at Eagle Farm

A lucrative sales bonus was the catalyst for NSW trainer Allan Denham to send Furbish to Queensland for his debut and the two-year-old obliged with victory at Eagle Farm.

Furbish ($2.40) was midfield and wide coming around the home turn but charged home to beat Lucky Tom ($3.50) score an impressive win in Friday's Novotel Brisbane Bloodstock Two Year Old (1000m).

The gelding carried the White family's purple and white colours made famous by horses such as Marscay, Euclase, Jetball, Filante, Triscay, Yippyio and Reenact.

The family patriarch Geoff White died in 2012 and his wife Beryl and children have carried on racing horses in the familiar colours.

A son of Group winner Collate, who was also raced by the Whites, Furbish was passed in at the 2013 Magic Millions sale but remained eligible for the QTIS race bonus scheme.

Furbish had won his only two trials at Wyong in impressive style but Denham decided to chase the QTIS bonus money rather than start him off in Sydney.

Gold Coast trainer Len Wheeler, who has been looking after Furbish in Queensland, said the gelding would remain in the north.

"Furbish is pretty smart but I think they are keen to look for more QTIS bonus races," Wheeler said.

Winning jockey Jim Byrne said Furbish had not been comfortable on the shifty track but once he steadied the gelding had been too strong.

Sunshine Coast tainer Stuart Kendrick is keen to chase black-type races with mare Sari who was having her first start for the Darby syndicate when she won a Class 5 (1000m) at Friday's meeting.

Darby Racing paid $53,000 for Sari at a Darley Australia dispersal sale with a view to breeding from the mare.

"Even if she can run a place in some of the winter carnival black-type races it will add to her value as a broodmare," Kendrick said.
