Petrology favoured to maintain Hayes roll

Thursday 10 April 2014, 5:19pm

Well-related two-year-old Petrology is favoured to back up a debut win and continue the momentum of the David Hayes stable at Caulfield on Saturday.

Petrology, a three-quarter brother to Group One winner Aqua D'Amore, trailed the speed on debut at Mornington city-class meeting before going on to beat Darley runner Alaska.

He has been installed at the top of betting for Saturday's Mindy Green Plate (1200m) at $3.

"He has trained on and looks to have improved since that run at Mornington," stable representative Tom Dabernig said.

"It looks a nice race and he should be competitive."

Dabernig said attention could shift to the spring if Petrology was able to maintain an unbeaten start to his career.

"This season we probably wouldn't be looking too much more beyond this Saturday," he said.

"If he happened to win then you'd probably back off and have him ready for early spring or something."

Hayes had a treble at Flemington last Saturday and backed it up with up double at Sandown on Wednesday.

Among the trainer's chances on the Caulfield card is Honey Steel's Gold in the Listed Galilee Series Final.

The gelding, a Listed winner over 1600m last season, didn't have the best of luck when unplaced over 2040m at Moonee Valley and is on the second line of betting stepping to 2400m.

Dabernig said Honey Steel's Gold's chances hinge on how well he settles from barrier seven in the field of 14.

"That barrier should just give him a chance to get cover," he said.

Options for Honey Steel's Gold include the VRC St Leger in Melbourne or the South Australian Derby.
