Fiorente suffers tendon injury

Monday 7 April 2014, 3:51pm

Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente has been retired after suffering a tendon injury in his near foreleg.

The horse was taken to the Randwick Equine Centre on Tuesday where the injury was confirmed.

Fiorente gave Waterhouse her first Melbourne Cup win in the spring and added the Australian Cup to his record last month.

He arrived in Australia in the spring of 2012 as a Group Two winner in England and finished second to Green Moon in that year's Melbourne Cup at his first southern hemisphere start.

He was placed in the All Aged Stakes in a cameo appearance last autumn before returning in the spring to win the Group Two Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and Australian racing's biggest race, the Melbourne Cup.

His autumn campaign started in brilliant fashion with victory in the Peter Young Stakes and Australian Cup in Melbourne before he headed to Sydney where he was unplaced in the Ranvet Stakes and third in Saturday's Group One BMW (2400m) at Rosehill.

The six-year-old son of Monsun has won six of his 20 starts and amassed more than $6.2 million prize money, most of that in Australia.

His large group of owners will now seek a stud deal for the six-year-old.
