Bailey demands keys to stables

Sunday 6 April 2014, 2:57pm

Racing Victoria stewards will soon have keys to enter every on-course stable in Melbourne.

Chief steward Terry Bailey says the move will give his team the ability to conduct race day inspections of stables without hindrance.

"We will be able to have unfettered access to stables at Caulfield and Flemington on race days," Bailey said.

"We have found that some stables are locked up with people inside when we go there but we still have trouble getting in."

Bailey said he had written to the Victoria and Melbourne Racing Clubs requesting their assistance.

The VRC are the landlords at Flemington while the MRC leases stables to trainers at Caulfield.

Bailey says he consulted the Australian Trainers' Association before requesting the provision of keys.

He added that stables preparing horses at off-track properties would not enjoy preferential treatment under the new integrity initiative.

"Most of the off-track properties have a pin code that we use to gain entry," Bailey said.

"They are required to advise us of the new code within 24 hours any time they change it."

Trainers have until Friday to hand over their keys.
