Gilltown Stud sire Azamour dies

Sunday 6 April 2014, 10:13am

Multiple Group One winner Azamour has been euthanised Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud after suffering a serious injury.

Azamour was standing his ninth season in Ireland and last year shuttled to Brighthill Stud in New Zealand where he covered Triassic, the dam of 10-time Group One winner So You Think.

Trained by John Oxx, the son of Night Shift won the Beresford Stakes as a juvenile before claiming the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown in his three-year-old career.

At four, he won the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

"We are sad to announce that the stallion, Azamour, was put down after sustaining a serious injury in his box this morning," a tweet from Aga Khan Studs on Saturday said.

"Despite the best efforts of both vets and attending staff, the four time Group 1 winner had to be euthanised on humane grounds today."

Exciting prospects by Azamour for this season are headed by Richard Hannon's three-year-old Chief Barker who landed last year's Ascendant Stakes at Haydock.

Azamour has also sired a host of talented jumpers, headed by Paul Nicholls' Grade One winner Zarkandar.
