Robl released from hospital after fall

Thursday 16 January 2014, 2:21pm

Popular Sydney jockey Peter Robl has been cleared of spinal injury and released from hospital after a race fall at Scone.

Robl fell when the horse he was riding buck jumped shortly after the start of the first race on Thursday.

He told trackside paramedics he had no feeling from the waist down and a rescue helicopter was called.

By the time it landed about 15 minutes after the incident, Robl had regained feeling in his legs but had pins and needles in his arms.

He was flown to Newcastle for CT scans and allowed to leave in the evening after being cleared of neurological damage.

The horse he was riding, In My Image, suffered no injuries.

Chief steward, Shane Cullen, said the gear had been inspected after the fall and it was found the breast plate, surcingle and girth were all new and in good order.

He also said there had been no issue with the way the horse had been saddled.

Robl made the trip to the country track to ride three horses for In My Image's trainer David Vandyke.

The Vandyke-trained Third Degree won the following race with Mitchell Bell aboard.

Vandyke said Third Degree was one of the reasons he had been able to convince Robl to ride at the meeting.

"He rode her in both her trials for me and really liked her," Vandyke said.

"It is good to get a win with her but in the big picture this has not been a good day."

Robl is booked for six rides at Randwick on Saturday but Racing NSW safety officer Maurice Logue said Robl could expect to be sore on Friday from grazing to his body.
