Frankel's first foal born at Coolmore

Thursday 16 January 2014, 8:40am

Frankel's first foal has been born to Group Three-winning mare Chrysanthemum.

The six-year-old daughter of Danehill Dancer gave birth to a bay colt at Coolmore Stud in Ireland on Saturday.

The stud reported that the foal is "a handsome colt with a good head, a white blaze and great presence".

Chrysanthemum, who spent her racing days with trainer David Wachman in County Tipperary, was the first mare scanned in foal to Frankel last year, and this is her first foal.

Trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil, Frankel retired from the track in October 2012 after taking his 100 per cent record to 16 with victory in the Champion Stakes.

Other top mares he has already attracted include Alexander Goldrun, Danedream, Dar Re Mi, Midday, Stacelita and Vodka.

The son of Galileo, now a six-year-old, mated with 133 mares between February and June in 2013 at STG125,000 ($A230,542) a time.

He also served a select group of mares including More Joyous to southern hemisphere time.

Bookmakers have been swift to put up markets on Frankel's offspring, with Betfred quoting the first foal at 5-2 to emulate his sire and win on his racecourse debut.

The colt is 33-1 with that firm to win the 2016 Dewhurst Stakes, 40-1 to land the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 2017 and 66-1 to lift the Derby.

William Hill gave a 4-1 quote that Frankel sires a Classic winner in the UK in 2017 while RaceBets make the Frankel-Chrysanthemum offspring an 80-1 chance to win the Derby.
