Gauci cops first suspension in six years

Wednesday 15 January 2014, 4:56pm

Veteran jockey Darren Gauci received his first careless riding suspension in six years at Caulfield on Wednesday.

He was one of three jockeys suspended for 10 meetings, starting after Saturday and keeping them out until January 28.

The other jockeys were Craig Newitt and apprentice Patrick Maloney, who rode a winning double but had his day soured when banned for careless riding after his winning ride in the last race on Try Pickle.

Gauci pleaded guilty to causing interference aboard Ali Vital when the field passed the winning post for the first time in the Salt & Pepper Plate (2430m).

Chief Steward Terry Bailey said the incident was in the high range of offences which would normally result in an 18 meeting ban but because of Gauci's good record, the penalty was reduced.

Craig Newitt pleaded guilty to careless riding aboard Makeadreamcometrue at the 400m in the BMW Handicap (1800m).
