Schofield loses appeal against suspension

Tuesday 14 January 2014, 3:30pm

Champion apprentice jockey Chad Schofield has lost his appeal against a 12 meeting suspension for careless riding.

The Cox Plate-winning jockey had appealed the stewards' decision and the severity of the penalty after he was found guilty of careless riding on fourth-placed Camos in a 1200m race at Seymour on January 9.

The stewards found Schofield had shifted out in the race causing Shezapoppi onto the heels of Sail The Stars who had to be checked.

Schofield was suspended from midnight on January 13 until January 23, missing two metropolitan and 10 provincial meetings.

The apprentice has a history of careless riding suspensions having missed around four months of last season.

Despite the lengthy absences, Schofield still managed to win the Melbourne apprentices' title, a year after taking the Sydney apprentices' premiership.

He leads this season's Melbourne apprentices' premiership and is sixth on the senior jockeys' standings.

His latest ban comes a month after he returned from back-to-back careless riding suspensions which kept him on the sidelines for three weeks.
