New criteria for major awards

Thursday 27 September 2012, 4:53pm

A new points system has been introduced to the awards criteria used to select the NSW champions for the season.

The changes come in the wake of the recent situation where Streama was controversially crowned NSW Champion Horse of the Year over More Joyous.

The NSW Racehorse Owners Association (NSWROA) has responded by revising the points system so there is a greater reward for horses winning Group One races.

The previous system rewarded consistency in stakes events.

A new award category has also been introduced for the 2012-13 season - NSW Miler of the Year.

The NSWROA hopes this will overcome the large concentration of horses previously encompassed by the sprinter/miler category.
