True tempo can bring Savvy result: O'Shea

Friday 11 October 2013, 3:24pm

John O'Shea's appraisal of Spring Champion Stakes favourite Savvy Nature has provided good news for one jockey while confirming the suspicions of another.

O'Shea is confident Savvy Nature has his rivals covered when it comes to both stamina and speed in the $400,000 race.

On that score, the Randwick trainer is relishing the prospect of a genuinely run race to help deliver a breakthrough Group One win for the colt which in turn would be jockey Jim Cassidy's 100th.

"I don't think they are going to loaf in the race which will be great for my horse," O'Shea said.

"And he showed in the Gloaming Stakes when he ran up to them really quickly that he has probably got the best turn of foot of any horse in the race."

O'Shea figures there will be no shortage of volunteers willing to take up the running and a strong gallop will help Savvy Nature, a son of the 2004 Spring Champion Stakes winner Savabeel.

Likewise, rival jockey Peter Robl says his mount Drago, also a stayer of considerable promise, will suited by a fast clip.

Drago took the minor placing behind Complacent and Savvy Nature in the Gloaming Stakes but it is the runner-up out of the main lead-up race who has Robl worried.

"I think my horse can beat Complacent but Savvy Nature I'm not so sure about," he said.

"I tried to get Savvy Nature out of his comfort zone in the Gloaming when I took off on Drago.

"But he still had a better turn of foot than I thought he would. Savvy Nature might be better than we give him credit for."

Bookmakers are thinking the same way with Savvy Nature the $3.50 Spring Champion favourite from Complacent ($4.60) and last Saturday's Dulcify Quality winner Rock Hero ($5).

Darley colt Complacent enjoyed a dream run to win the Gloaming, a traditional lead-up race which has supplied 10 of the past 20 Spring Champion winners.

It's A Dundeel completed the double last year while Doctor Doom (2011) and Erewhon (2010) went one better than their Gloaming finishes.

With the Spring Champion Stakes run a week later this year, there's every chance the Randwick race will have more bearing on Victoria Derby markets than Saturday's Caulfield Guineas.

Savvy Nature is at the top of betting charts for next month's Derby at $7 from Complacent ($8) and Drago ($9).
