Better Than Ready on the mend

Wednesday 9 October 2013, 5:49pm

Better Than Ready is in a race against time to resurrect his spring campaign.

Trainer Kelly Schweida's Melbourne plans for Better Than Ready were thrown into turmoil when the entire suffered chest and leg injuries after crashing through the outside running rail working on the Doomben course proper on September 30.

Schweida said Better Than Ready had resumed slow trackwork at Eagle Farm.

"He started back at the track on Monday and the cuts are healing good but there's still a bit of bruising and he's not 100 per cent yet," he said.

"There's a bit of soft tissue damage so we've just got to wait until he comes right.

"The vet's had a look at him and doesn't think there's any structural damage but he's only going to be doing slow work until everything comes back into sync."

Schweida originally planned to kick off Better Than Ready's Melbourne campaign in Saturday's Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield until the trackwork mishap.

Better Than Ready wasn't entered for the Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on October 25.

Other options for Better Than Ready, depending on his recovery rate, are the Group Two Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby day or the Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at the same track a week later.
