New Zealander Sangster was the notable absentee at Tuesday's declaration stage for the Caulfield Cup but the 2011 Victoria Derby winner remained in the mix for the Melbourne Cup despite pulling up sore from his last in the Turnbull Stakes.

Owner Lloyd Williams has the biggest team, paying up for six horses including Caulfield Cup topweight Green Moon for the 2400m race on October 19.

The others in the Williams team for Caulfield are Fawkner, Masked Marvel, Mourayan, Sea Moon and Metropolitan winner Seville.

Sydney's premier trainer Chris Waller and his Melbourne counterpart Peter Moody each have five horses left in contention.

Waller has Foreteller, Hawkspur, Kelinni, Moriarty and Royal Descent while Moody's team is Ibicenco, Kesampour, Manighar, My Quest For Peace and Sneak A Peek.

Green Moon is entered for Saturday's Caulfield Stakes and if he is not among the final Caulfield Cup acceptors, weights will rise 1.5kg to ensure the minimum topweight of 58kg.

Manighar, who also failed in the Turnbull Stakes, is also a doubtful runner and his absence would mean a weight rise of 3kg.

A decision on whether Manighar runs will be made after Moody assesses his trackwork on Saturday.

There are 72 horses left vying for the 24 positions in the Melbourne Cup including It's A Dundeel who has suffered a training setback due to a foot abscess.

Market leaders Fiorente, Puissance de Lune and Hawkspur are all among the declarations along with the past two winners, Dunaden (2011) and Green Moon (2012).

French horse Dunaden, the winner of last year's Caulfield Cup, is one of 12 internationally trained runners still being aimed at the Melbourne Cup on November 5.

Irish St Leger winner Voleuse de Coeurs and French Prix Deauville winner Tres Blue will join Australian trainers Mike Moroney and Gai Waterhouse respectively when they arrive later this month.

It's A Dundeel is also among the 36 third declarations for the Cox Plate on October 26 and remains the second favourite behind Atlantic Jewel.
