Craig Williams to appeal suspension

Saturday 5 October 2013, 8:06pm

Star jockey Craig Williams will appeal the severity of a careless riding suspension in a bid to ride Speediness and Shamus Award in Group One races next Saturday.

Williams was one of four jockeys suspended on Turnbull Stakes day at Flemington with Nick Hall to also consider appealing the severity of his suspension which means he will miss the ride on Marwood in the Caulfield Guineas.

Michelle Payne will be unable to partner her favourite horse Yosei in the Toorak Handicap after being banned for 10 meetings for careless riding in the Blazer Stakes aboard Lake Sententia.

Stewards suspended Williams for his winning ride on the Robert Smerdon-trained filly Anatina in the Listed Cap D'Antibes Stakes (1000m).

Williams pleaded guilty to shifting out at the 50m mark of the race, causing Luke Nolen's mount Holy Cow to check.

Stewards ruled the carelessness in the mid range but Williams said he would appeal the severity, believing Glen Boss's mount Chloe In Paris had contributed to the incident.

"I will appeal the severity to try to get back to ride Speediness in the Toorak and Shamus Award in the Guineas," Williams said.

"I've been suspended once in 21 months."

Williams will start his suspension straight away, relinquishing rides on Sunday when he was due to partner Folding Gear in the Benalla Cup.

As it stands Williams and Hall can return to riding on October 15, the day before the Thousand Guineas while Payne can return on Thousand Guineas day.

Hall pleaded guilty to careless riding aboard Fawkner over the concluding stages of the Group One Turnbull Stakes, causing interference to Jet Away.

Nikita McLean was earlier suspended for 12 meetings for careless riding on Beltonic.
