Gai Waterhouse quizzed on Rose scratching

Saturday 14 September 2013, 2:34pm

Gai Waterhouse attended a closed stewards' inquiry at Rosehill on Saturday into the withdrawal of Aussies Love Sport from the $1 million Golden Rose.

The colt, who is raced in partnership by Gerry Harvey and Segenhoe Stud, was scratched despite a vet test by Racing NSW's Craig Suann on Friday which passed him fit to run provided he satisifed Waterhouse's stable vet on race morning.

Suann's examination of Aussies Love Sport centred on an old wound on his hind leg.

Waterhouse was called into the stewards' room after the second race at Rosehill on Saturday but the racing press were not allowed into the brief hearing.

Chief steward Ray Murrihy said the matter had been concluded and stressed the three-year-old had not been scratched due to fitness concerns.

"It didn't come out on vet's advice or on veterinary grounds," Murrihy said.

"I had a conversation with the owner last night and the horse was scratched after that."

Waterhouse had an early win at Moonee Valley on Saturday when Divine Calling delivered Damien Oliver his first metropolitan victory since his return from a 10-month riding ban for betting on a race in which he was riding.

Ecuador added to her day with an all-the-way win at Rosehill.
