Dandino confirms Melbourne Cup target

Sunday 18 August 2013, 4:23pm

English stayer Dandino has emulated his stablemate Jakkalberry to win the American St Leger and confirm a Melbourne Cup start for his Australian owners.

The Marco Botti-trained Jakkalberry won finished third in last year's Cup after winning the St Leger at Arlington for Darren Dance's Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock.

Injury has ruled Jakkalberry out of a return trip to Melbourne with all hopes now with Dandino who won the St Leger after a chequered passage.

Ryan Moore had to change course on Dandino in the straight after being pocketed but the favourite rallied to beat Suntracer by half a length.

"I was locked in the whole race but he was the best horse," Moore said.

"He picked it up natural. I thought I'd keep it simple, but they were on top of me the whole race."

Dandino is a $17 chance for the Caulfield Cup and is at $26 for the Melbourne Cup.

He is the winner of two Group races over 2400 metres in England but his win over 2700m in the St Leger has given Dance confidence he can step up to the 3200m of the Melbourne Cup.

"Before this race I thought that he is probably a better Caulfield Cup chance than a Melbourne Cup chance as his form over 2400 metres has been really good," Dance said.

"But after running out the 2700-metre trip here, he may just be a better two-mile prospect now than we thought."

Dandino will be among the first consignment of international horses to arrive in Melbourne on September 28.

The Andrew Balding-trained Side Glance finished third in the Arlington Million to confirm his trip to Melbourne for the Cox Plate for Qatar's Sheikh Fahad, owners of 2011 Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden.
