Distance dilemma for Less Is More

Friday 16 August 2013, 2:43pm

Initially identified as a stayer, Less Is More has trainer David Vandyke in two-minds about the depth of his stamina.

And it's a conundrum that won't be solved this weekend when he lines up over 1800m in Saturday's St Johns Park Bowling Club Handicap at Rosehill.

A winner over 2400 metres in France, the six-year-old was stepped up to that journey in the Brisbane Cup but could finish only midfield.

Vandyke has thrown in a nomination for the Caulfield Cup this spring but he is still to be convinced that Less Is More's future lays in staying races.

"There is a question mark over whether he can get more than 2000 metres," Vandyke said.

"I freshened him up and brought him back to 1500 metres last start. He ran a terrific race, he should have won I think, he just never got a crack at them."

Less Is More came from last to finish fifth to Coup Ay Tee in the Winter Challenge last start, beaten less than two lengths.

He carried 54kg in that and rises to 59kg on Saturday, a weight he last carried when fourth to Mourayan in the Craven Plate.

"He goes up in weight on Saturday but he has carried 59 at weight-for-age so I don't think it will be an issue," Vandyke said.

Less Is More's Sydney goals include the Kington Town Stakes (2000m) on September 14, a race Vandyke won two years ago with the now-retired Lamasery.

Total Attraction will line up for Vandyke in the Mounties Group Handicap (1400m) in a performance that will determine her racing future.

Formerly trained by Peter Moody and bought by Segenhoe Stud as a tried horse, the Group Two placegetter was set for the broodmare barn this spring.

At her only start for Vandyke last month she finished a solid third to Follonica over 1200 metres, prompting connections to consider delaying her retirement.

"They were looking to send her to stud but they sent her to me first to see how she would go and she performed well first-up," Vandyke said.

"I'm hoping she carries that forward into tomorrow and we will reassess her after that."

Magic In The Mix rounds out his team in the Merrylands RSL Club Handicap (1500m).
