Stitt has sights on another Taree Cup

Friday 16 August 2013, 12:28pm

Trainer Ross Stitt has always believed Single Spirit would run a strong 2000 metres and his opinion will be put to the test in the Taree Cup on Sunday.

Stitt will be chasing his fourth success in his hometown Cup after winning with Critic's Pride (1987), Fun Road (1988) and Shoemaker (2001).

"I've had plenty of seconds as well," Stitt said.

One of those seconds came last year when Southern Shimmer was beaten by tearaway leader The Paymaster.

Southern Shimmer is returning from a tendon injury and is scheduled for an exhibition gallop between races on Sunday.

Single Spirit is coming off a last start second to Pepperwood over 1600m in the Coffs Harbour Cup on August 1, an effort that pleased Stitt.

"He ran out of his skin. The other horse (Pepperwood) got an unbelievable run up on the rails," Stitt said.

"My horse acquitted himself well."

The Taree Cup will be Single Spirit's first attempt at 2000m but it is the final stepping stone of a carefully laid plan for the improving gelding.

"The way he races, I've always thought he'd get a good 2000 metres," Stitt said.

"He just relaxes so well in his races and has got a great turn of foot."

Single Spirit, like Southern Shimmer, has been patiently handled by Stitt.

The gelding has recorded five wins and three placings from 13 starts and Stitt believes the best is yet to come.

Single Spirit will be ridden by Robert Thompson who has combined with Stitt for a host of winners over the past three decades including veteran Youthful Jack in last month's Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.
