Gelding operation key to Polskie Prince

Thursday 15 August 2013, 12:25pm

A gelding procedure has been the making of the Joe Janiak-trained Polskie Prince.

On Friday, the four-year-old by Snippetson chases a hat-trick of wins in the Bushland Tavern Chinese Restaurant Benchmark 55 Handicap (1250m) at Taree.

Polskie Prince, who goes by the stable nickname of Snip, was purchased privately by Coffs Harbour-based Janiak for $6000 after being passed in at the Scone Yearling Sale.

While small in stature, Polskie Prince showed ability in his first preparation with a second at Coffs Harbour and a fifth at Grafton, initially prompting Janiak to leave him as a colt.

"He always showed ability but wasn't very big so we put him out for a long spell hoping he'd grow," Janiak said.

"When he came back in he hadn't grown much but filled out a bit.

"When he came back into work he just wasn't stretching out. We knew there was something wrong.

"We had him gelded and they found he had a twisted testicle which explained why he wasn't working like he had been.

"Ever since he's been gelded he's improved in leaps and bounds. He's going real good."

Polskie Prince returned from a spell to record his maiden win at Grafton on July 14, then backed up with an even more impressive success at Coffs Harbour on July 31.

"It's hard to win three in a row but I think he's up to it," Janiak said.

"The form around his past two wins has been very good.

"Provided he runs well tomorrow, I'll take him up to Brisbane next start over 1400 metres. Tomorrow is a nice stepping stone for him."
