The re-opening of the Moe track delayed

Wednesday 14 August 2013, 5:08pm

The re-opening of the Moe track has been delayed until February next year to allow further consolidation of the new StrathAyr surface.

The track has undergone a $4.5 million reconstruction designed to make Moe a focal point in Victoria's Gippsland area.

It will host 14 meetings a season and also have the capability to hold meetings that need to be transferred from other centres in the region.

Racing was scheduled to resume at Moe on November 26 but officials have decided to adopt a cautious approach to ensure the track's long-term future.

Racing Victoria chief executive Bernard Saundry said the decision to delay the return of racing to Moe would pay dividends for the industry and local community in the long run.

"The Moe Racing Club, state government and the Victorian racing industry have made a significant investment in developing a state-of-the-art track that will become a major asset for Victorian racing and the local community for many years to come," Saundry said.

"By allowing the track time to consolidate over the summer months and now resume racing in February, we are collectively protecting the long term future of the track and ensuring that it's in absolute prime condition for the safe and successful resumption of racing."
