McEvoy praises mature ride by Nisbet

Saturday 10 August 2013, 2:36pm

Apprentice Kayla Nisbet earned high praise from trainer Tony McEvoy after a patient ride helped Pocket Rockets continue his rich vein of form at Flemington on Saturday.

The McEvoy-trained Pocket Rockets ($9) notched his fourth win from his past five starts, and his third in a row, as he let down strongly over the final 200m to reel in Chiaramonte ($8.50) in the Robert Eldridge & Lesley Millson Handicap (1000m).

The six-year-old former Hong Kong-based gelding scored by a neck with another 1-1/4 lengths to Beauty Cash ($101).

McEvoy was concerned with Pocket Rockets' rails draw in the straight-track race but Nisbet was able to settle the gelding in behind the speed and when a split appeared, Pocket Rockets did the rest.

"That ride was a 12 out of 10," McEvoy said.

"I said to Kayla, `we've drawn barrier one, it doesn't look the place to be, I just want you to be patient and get to a better part of the track'. It was an outstanding piece of riding from a girl who claims three kilos."

McEvoy was confident Pocket Rockets would run well at Flemington on the back of his past two wins in Adelaide.

The trainer said he hadn't looked much further than Saturday's event.

"The horse is just in rare form," McEvoy said.
