Rosehill unearths new-season 3YO talent

Saturday 3 August 2013, 2:45pm

Impressive wins by two of the new-season three-year-olds at Rosehill on Saturday have set the tone for the spring features.

The Tim Martin-trained Kirov ($4) took out Australian Turf Club (1400m) by 1-3/4 lengths from Harry Hotspur ($8.50), stretching away in the final stages after the pair shared the lead, with $2.80 favourite Sugar Rush a short neck third.

Windjammer ($7) from the Bjorn Baker stable was equally dominant in the National Jockeys' Trust (1100m), winding up in the straight under 59kg to get the better of Mr Entertainer ($31) by 1-1/4 lengths with Pirandello ($5.50) a head third.

Both winners were ridden by Hugh Bowman who fought an epic battle with Nash Rawiller for the Sydney premiership.

Kirov's owner Alan Bell said the win would prompt a re-think on the colt's program and the Golden Rose (1400m) on September 14 could be on the agenda.

"We will have to regroup," Bell said.

"I'm not sure now. We had been heading to the Spring Champion but the Golden Rose could be in the plans now."

The $1 million Golden Rose could also be on the cards for Windjammer although Baker said sprints were more likely his forte.

"He struggled over 1400 (metres) last time but the Golden Rose is in the mix," Baker said.

"He is very, very fast. He is a seriously fast horse. Possibly the fastest I have ever trained."
