Prince Of Caviar second in Bendigo return

Wednesday 13 November 2019, 4:38pm

Four-year-old Prince Of Caviar, son of champion Black Caviar, has finished second as a short-priced favourite at Bendigo in his first start for more than a year.

Trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, Prince Of Caviar is by Sebring out of Black Caviar, the mare who won all of her 25 starts during her race career which included 15 Group Ones.

Prince Of Caviar broke his maiden at his fourth start in September last year at Bendigo and he resumed on Wednesday for his first start since in an 1100m benchmark-70 handicap at the same track.

Stewards reported the horse had undergone a throat procedure since his last start.

Prince Of Caviar was sent out the $1.60 favourite in a field of five and settled just behind the leaders before hitting the front under jockey Luke Nolen in the home straight.

But the Daniel Bowman-trained Mumbles, who had stalked the favourite, was able to overhaul Prince Of Caviar and drew away to win by 1-3/4-lengths.

Prince Of Caviar has one win and three seconds from his five starts.

He is the second of Black Caviar's foals to race, with Oscietra winning two of her five starts before being retired to the breeding barn.
