Crowd figures say Everest here to stay

Saturday 19 October 2019, 6:56pm

The Everest race day has found its place in Sydney with 40,912 race goers flocking to Randwick.

Saturday's crowd was a few hundred more than came to see champion Winx in her farewell appearance in April.

There was some criticism of the clash with the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne, with the Everest the newcomer on the block.

The Caulfield Cup was won by Japanese horse Mer De Glace with the Melbourne carnival attracting a wide array of northern hemisphere horses while the third running of The Everest had one.

The $14 million Everest, which has no Group standing, was won by three-year-old Yes Yes Yes, the youngest horse in the field ridden by Glen Boss.

The colt is trained by Chris Waller, Sydney's premier trainer who also prepared Winx.

"You talk to people through the week. These horses run all the time and people can relate to them," Waller said.

"Half of them might be back next year, maybe more

"These are the best sprinters in Australia. People want to see them run two weeks beforehand. It's not just about one race. That is why the race will go ahead."

After the final race, the Randwick Theatre of the Horse was packed as international singing star Kelly Rowland performed for 45 minutes.
