Shamexpress pleases rider in workout

Wednesday 3 July 2013, 9:35am

Australian colt Shamexpress has had a work-out at Newmarket ahead of his tilt at the July Cup.

Champion British jockey Richard Hughes has been booked to ride him in the Group One sprint on Saturday week.

Shamexpress was partnered by Paul Koumis in his gallop and the work rider reported he handled the undulating course well.

"He worked terrific and I'm very pleased with him. He handled the track really well and had no problem with the undulations," Koumis told www.newmarketracecourses.co.uk.

"He has come on from Royal Ascot. We missed four or five days with him when he first came over and he ran a bit like that in the King's Stand Stakes.

"I'm not saying he would have won but he would have been third or fourth.

"I think the 1000 metre (five furlongs) trip takes him out of the comfort zone and six furlongs will suit him better.

"He'll work again on Tuesday and we'll see if we can get Richard Hughes to have a sit on him."

Shamexpress finished ninth in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot.
