Zennista plans up for review after Cup win

Saturday 29 June 2013, 5:05pm

The Queensland winter campaign of New Zealand stayer Zennista could be extended after the mare's dominant win in the Caloundra Cup on Saturday.

Ridden by Damian Browne, Zennista ($5.50) scored a 2-1/4 lengths win from Voila Ici ($13) with Rothera ($5) 2-3/4 lengths away third.

Zennista is booked on a New Zealand flight on Tuesday but trainer Lisa Latta is considering next Saturday's Queensland Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm for the mare.

"I've always wanted to try her over two miles so I'll see how she pulls up and leave it until Monday to make a final decision," Latta said.

Zennista ran third in the Brisbane Cup at her previous start when Latta said she wanted to over-race.

"She drew a really wide gate in the Brisbane Cup and didn't quite settle as I would've liked her to," she said.

"To still fight on for third that day was a good really effort."

Latta is enjoying her most successful season of training and is currently second on the New Zealand trainers' premiership.

A spring campaign for Zennista is high on the agenda but a Caulfield-Melbourne Cups bid is unlikely.

"There are plenty of good races for her in Melbourne without having to worry about any of the big Cup races," she said.

"Something like the Matriarch is probably a better option for her."

Browne said Zennista was always travelling comfortably in third place before overhauling Voila Ici at the 300-metre mark.

"The pace was genuine and that allowed her to get into a lovely rhythm," he said.

Glen Colless said Voila Ici tried hard to match Zennista in the final 200 metres.

"The winner was going to put four lengths on him but to his credit he chased her hard all the way to the line," he said.

"He really put in today and there's no doubt he's got to be free-wheeling like that in a race otherwise he's just not as effective."
