Cadogan set to return after virus setback

Thursday 15 August 2019, 10:07am

Promising galloper Cadogan will be eased back into racing after recovering from a virus which saw him miss most of the winter carnival.

Cadogan resumes from a spell in the Harrison Menswear Plate (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

He was rated a genuine chance for this year's Group One Stradbroke Handicap after winning three races in a row and finishing an unlucky fourth in Magic Millions Cup.

The gelding resumed with an unlucky unplaced run at Eagle Farm in April before heading to Scone for the Luskin Star Stakes where he finished last behind eventual Stradbroke winner Trekking.

But Cadogan was found to have a virus after the run and sent for a spell.

Trainer Toby Edmonds said Cadogan appeared to have recovered and had trialled nicely at the Gold Coast last month.

"He had a very high temperature after Scone so we had no option but to miss the winter," Edmonds said.

"We don't want to rush him at this stage. He can ease back in and then we can start looking at having another crack at the Magic Millions Cup."

Apprentice Jackson Murphy will claim 2kg on Cadogan, reducing his weight to 57kg.

Murphy will also ride Whypeeo for Edmonds in the Lady Williams Memorial Handicap (1000m).

Edmonds said he was starting to run out of options to get Whypeeo, a stakes winner earlier in his career, back in winning form.

"His form hasn't been bad. He has had no luck from his barrier draws and a few other things have gone against him," Edmonds said

"Once his confidence is back he is a top-class horse."
