Trainer Ben Currie to seek stay at QCAT

Wednesday 20 February 2019, 11:29am

Trainer Ben Currie's application for a stay of a suspension handed down at a show cause hearing will be heard on Thursday.

Currie fronted the show cause hearing on Monday after stewards asked him to show why he was fit to continue training until animal cruelty charges against him were heard.

He was hit with the seven charges, which include allegations of jigger use and shock-wave treatment, last Friday.

Stewards found Currie was not a fit person to continue training pending the outcome of an inquiry and stood him down him immediately.

Currie lodged an application for an internal review on Tuesday which allowed his lawyers to seek a stay from the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The QCAT hearing is listed for Thursday morning and the stay application is expected to be opposed by stewards.

Currie has written to his owners saying he will dispute any claims he has not acted in the welfare of his horses.

He is also listed to appear in the Supreme Court on Friday when his lawyers will argue legal issues regarding other charges he faces.

Currie has been training on a stay after earlier being issued with 28 charges from a raid on his stables in April last year and four unrelated positive swab charges.
